The Newcastle city council area has almost twice the average NSW rate of assaults.[2] The Newcastle city council area also has higher than average domestic violence and vandalism rates.[3] The NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics found an average 8.6 per cent yearly increase in assault related to domestic violence throughout the Hunter Valley between October 1996 and September 2006.[4]
There were 10,963 incidents of malicious damage to property in the year to September 2006, an increase from 6844 incidents of malicious damage to property in the year to September 1997.[5] Dr Weatherburn from the Bureau of Crime Statistics stated that the majority of this vandalism was carried out by 16- to 25-year-olds[6], and that the vandalism was a symptom of "boredom, drinking, anger and frustration".[7]
